Bodhi Path Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Bodhi Path Buddhist Center offers a high quality curriculum of instruction in Buddhist meditation practice and philosophy. The Center was founded in 1997 at the direction of Shamar Rinpoche. Since then, hundreds of students have come to learn and practice in a modern, non-sectarian environment focused on authentic Buddhist teachings taught and practiced by authentic teachers. We are a diverse community of practitioners encompassing all ages and levels of practice. Dawa Tarchin Phillips is the resident teacher, and we regularly host visiting teachers.

The Course: Mind Training is a transformative practice, containing the entire path that can lead one to awakening. Tonglen literally means sending and taking, a practice that unburdens us from ego's perspective and the burden of self concern. It increases our capacity for compassion towards all, including ourselves.

Teacher: Santa Barbara Center's curriculum is led by the resident teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips, a masterful dharma teacher and well-known mindfulness and meditation expert. Bodhi Path Santa Barbara regularly hosts visiting teachers.

Our Curriculum Series

Bodhi Path Santa Barbara offers a multi-year integrated curriculum program starting in Jan 2020. Many have found deep and profound peace through studying, reflecting, and meditating on the teachings of the Buddha. The Bodhi Path curriculum is designed to offer western lay students a comprehensive foundation for practice. There is no requirement that a student commit to studying the curriculum in its entirety; you are encouraged to join in all or part of this cycle of teachings. Registration for each course is required.

The Bodhi Path curriculum is based on the teachings of Mind Training (Tibetan: Lojong), a profound system of contemplative practices that helps bring mindfulness, awareness and insight to our experiences, both on and off the meditation cushion. These teachings have been preserved by an unbroken lineage of masters since the time of the Buddha, and are presented at all Bodhi Path centers, along with supporting practices and study topics.

Testimonials: Dawa Tarchin Phillips is a brilliant teacher! ... I am amazed by his consistent ability to speak and to listen with utmost presence and clarity. His extensive knowledge of the Buddhist tradition is clearly apparent, but so is his ability to interweave that with practice that allows students to not just hear, but also experience and feel the teachings in real time. Most of all, I treasure Dawa's compassion and warmth.

Dawa is a tremendously skilled leader and a gifted teacher. It is always of benefit to spend time with him and his students. I feel incredibly fortunate!
Joe K.

Dawa has a very direct ability to speak to each individual in a way that hits home, while resonating with all the others in the room.
